May 2022

Rocky River ‘Riters’ reading for April was Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, with members reporting on the book. The reading for May has not arrived yet (library glitch – a very rare occurrence).

Members choose new words and quotes from readings they do in the month. Words included sangfroid, lycanthrope, adumbrated, flaneur, horripilation, numinous and chasten. Quotes included “I’m sure that connoisseurs such as yourselves can appreciate how an accomplished tale-teller pines to speak, how he swells with his undischarged narratives when he is denied an audience. He moons and mourns for all the unborn felicities of expression, the delicate internal resonances of theme and image which, lacking issue from his fecund mind, must inflate him.”

Rocky River ‘Riters’ newest book, Reflections, is available by contacting our secretary, or from Reflections in Crystal Brook, the Information Centre in Laura, or SFDC in Gladstone, for $15.

Each month there is a writing challenge to members to write about the topic for the following month’s meeting. This challenge is open to anyone who wishes to enter. The topic is given and a piece needs to be written to that topic before next meeting. If you wish to enter, please write a short piece of prose or poetry to the topic and send to our secretary at ruby_08@bigpond.com before June 8th. The challenge for May is to write about “the picnic”.

We are planning another editing workshop as part of our programme for 2022 to take place in August. We are looking forward to our speaker from the Laura Literary Awards, Dr Annette Marner, running this for us.

The Laura Literary Awards book of winners and runners up for 2021 is available from Rocky River ‘Riters, or the above shops, for $15.

Entries are now being judged for the 2022 Laura Literary Awards. Winners will be announced at the Laura Literary Awards presentation at the Diocesan Hall in Gladstone on the 13th of August from 2:30 pm.

Rocky River ‘Riters’ meetings are in Gladstone the second Friday of every month. Please contact us for meeting information.

The creative writing meetings are being held in Crystal Brook on the 4th Wednesday each month at 6:30 pm. Please contact us for meeting information. The next session is Wednesday May 25th

Our next meeting will be on June 10th.
